Military Police

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) recognizes that Canadian Forces Military Police (MP) Officers often possess unique experiences similar to those found in their civilian police counterparts. These experiences may also qualify an interested party for special consideration within the CPS. It is important to note applicants will be assessed on a case to case basis.

Consideration Criteria - Military Police (MP)

Experienced Military Police Officers will have their CF service time recognized from the commencement of their Regular Force - Basic Military Police Training (QL3) to their release date (if employed in a garrison police role). Further MP applications must include:

• A completed Application Package that includes the Experienced Officer Disclosure Form,
• Include a resume and detailed list of any seminars and/or external courses obtained,
• Submit at least two years of Personnel Evaluation Reports (PERs) and a up to date Member’s Personnel Record Resume (MPRR), and
• QL3 course certificate.

Time spent in Basic Military Qualification (QL2), “Field Platoons’ or their equivalents do not qualify for this consideration.

 

With Advanced Military Police Training (QL5) and, if the following criteria are met, Military Police may have the written exam waived, if they have:

• At least two years of garrison policing experience over their MP careers,
• Currently employed as an MP with the Canadian Forces Military Police Branch or employed as such within the past year,
• Be in good standing with the CF, the Military Police Branch and be free and clear of any ongoing internal/external investigations or disciplines,
• Submit a completed Application Package that includes an Experienced Officer Disclosure Form,
• Submit at least two years of Personnel Evaluation Reports (PERs) and a up to date Member’s Personnel Record Resume (MPRR),
• Include a resume and detailed list of any seminars and/or external courses obtained, and
• QL3 and QL5 course certificate.

Upon completion of the selection process and selection, successful applicants will qualify for move incentives, limited cost recovery and flexible course dates to help alleviate CF release terms (if applicable).

Minimum DEO Applicant Criteria

In addition to the minimum requirements, experienced officer applicants who wish to be considered for engagement as a DEO will be required to meet these additional requirements.

• Two years previous policing experience, including paid recruit training with an accredited Canadian police agency.
• Currently employed (or was employed within the last year) as a police officer with a Canadian police agency, including:  The RCMP, provincial, municipal, or regional police service.

• Military Police, Special Constables, and those with policing experience outside Canada  may qualify and will be assessed on an individual basis.

• In good standing with their current police agency and free and clear of any ongoing internal investigations or disciplines.

• Submit the Application  and Personal Disclosure Form
• Include the Vision Report and if required, the Supplemental Vision Forms
• Submit two years of developmental assessments and include a detailed list of any in-service training completed.

DEO Selection Process

• A-PREP
• Screening Interview
• Panel Interview
• Polygraph Examination
• Psychological Assessment
• Background Investigation

DEO Orientation Program

• Upon acceptance into the DEO program, the officer will undergo a minimum of two weeks orientation and certification followed by a 12-week-long field training phase.
• DEO candidates will serve an 18-month-long probationary period.

DEO Remuneration

• Officers entering the Calgary Police Service through the DEO program will be compensated in accordance with their experience by receiving the equivalent salary as a CPS officer with similar experience, to a maximum of four years of completed service.

International Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the Calgary Police Service. Due to an increasing number of applicants, the CPS is temporarily suspending the formal international application process effective April 1, 2008. Since its launch in 2006, the Service's international recruiting program has been a great success. It has attracted candidates from all over the U.K. and beyond. However, international recruiting efforts, combined with a new marketing campaign and focus on local recruiting, have resulted in a significant increase in applications and a heavy caseload for CPS file managers.

In order to efficiently and effectively manage the incoming files, the Service has decided to scale down its international recruiting efforts. This will allow the CPS to continue to provide the best customer service possible.

Although the Calgary Police Service is focused on local recruitment, experienced international police officers are invited to forward a curriculum vitae or resume to the Recruiting Unit at cpsrecruiting@calgarypolice.ca. All CVs and resume will be kept on file for one year. Suitable candidates may be contacted in the future if the Calgary Police Service international recruiting program is reopened.

Should the process reopen, individuals who have submitted CVs or resume may be invited to enter the formal application process described below. The Calgary Police Service has an extensive application process that identifies the most suitable candidates. Once a candidate is selected they will be required to facilitate the various stages of the process during a one-week visit to Calgary. While in Calgary, applicants will be required to complete the following stages:

1. The Alberta Police Cognitive Abilities Test (APCAT) and the Alberta Communication Test (ACT)
2. Personal Disclosure Form interview (PDF)
3. Behavior Descriptive Interview (BDI) - panel interview
4. Polygraph test
5. Psychological test
6. Physical Ability Requirement Evaluation (PARE)

Each stage is based on the successful completion of the previous one. If a candidate is successful through the entire application process, a conditional offer will be mailed out. Applications will stay on file until Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residence Status is attained through Citizenship and Immigration Canada. More than 100 police constables have been hired since the international recruiting program's inception. The Calgary Police Service thanks all international applicants for their interest. Any future changes to the international application process will be updated on the CPS recruiting website.
